White House Reveals Government Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Third Week
The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, making good on earlier warnings in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.
Official Announcement and Initial Details
The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.
Although the official provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.
Union Response and Legal Challenges
Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the moves in court.
“It is disgraceful that the government has used the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to the public nationwide,” stated a national union president, representing the AFGE.
The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved before then.
At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican bill, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.
Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Last week, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from implementing any layoffs during the funding gap. Additionally, a federal judge directed the government to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been recalled to execute staff reductions.
An analysis contended that a government shutdown restricts the ability of the administration to carry out firings, referencing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.
Impact on Workers
The layoffs occurred on the very day that government employees received only a partial paycheck covering the final days of September but excluding the start of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the month.
A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.
This is unjust to make government staff suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate stated. “Our air traffic controllers, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”
A notable point is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
